Get rid of that itchy and irritating feeling with our supply of head lice treatment.

Get peace of mind with our head lice treatment service

There is nothing worse than discovering your child has nits. They are itchy, irritating and can be stubborn to get rid of.

But there is no need to worry with our head lice treatment scheme.

Pop into your local branch of Whitworth pharmacy and we can help you sort that nit problem fast.

  • Head lice are very small insects that like to live in clean, healthy hair.

Their eggs are called nits and are brown or white empty shells that you can find loose in the hair. The insects themselves are the head lice and attached themselves to strands of hair.

The itching that most people experience is caused by an allergic reaction to the louse bite.

You should always treat head lice as soon as you spot them and check everyone in the house. Adults can catch and transmit head lice just as easily as kids!

  • The symptoms of headlice include:

    • An itchy scalp

    • The feeling that something is moving in your hair

    • A rash on the back of your neck

    • Small white eggshells (nits) behind the ears or at the back of the neck

However, the only way to check that it is head lice (and not something else like psoriasis, dandruff or sensitivity to a shampoo) is to check for live lice. You can do this by using a special fine-toothed comb. These are inexpensive and easily available from your local pharmacy.

  • Simply pop into your local branch of Whitworth with your child and ask to talk to the pharmacist.

You will both be taken into a private consultation room where you can have a chat and your pharmacist will prescribe head lice treatment where necessary. As prescriptions for children are free, there will be no charge for the head lice treatment.

However, there are certain criteria that we have to meet under this scheme. For example, the NHS recommends that you try wet combing first, before applying chemical treatments. This is to protect your child and to help ensure any head lice treatment is effective.

  • 1. Will I get free head lice treatment?
Yes, children are able to get free head lice treatment if there is a service commissioned in the pharmacy. However, wet combing is advised before chemical treatment.

    2. Do we need an appointment?
No, just pop into your local Whitworth branch and ask one of our friendly staff members for help.

    3. Do I need to keep my child off school if he or she has head lice?
No. Your child can continue attending schooling if they have head lice.

Worried that your child may have headlice? Stop the spread and nip the problem in the bud by popping into your local branch of Whitworth and speaking to one of our pharmacists.
