Whitworth Weight Loss Programme

Get support and treatment for your weight loss journey beyond just diet and exercise

Get support and treatment for your weight loss journey beyond just diet and exercise

Whitworth Weight Loss Programme is a medicated weight loss service, using Saxenda

At Whitworth, we believe that weight loss is a journey and not a miracle.

People with obesity can make several attempts to lose weight over time and it can become a cycle that doesn’t get easier. We have therefore developed our own medicated Whitworth Weight Loss Programme, using Saxenda. This weight loss programme combines the Saxenda product plus the expertise and support of your local pharmacy team.

Visit your local Whitworth Pharmacy to find out more.

The main element of our weight loss service is an injectable prescription medicine called Saxenda. This is suitable for people who have weight related medical problems or obesity (BMI over 30).

Saxenda contains the active ingredient Liraglutide. GLP-1 is a hormone that is released within the body in response to food intake and acts as a physiological regulator of appetite. Saxenda is 97% similar to GLP-1 and works in the brain to decrease appetite and thereby reduce food intake resulting in weight loss.

Saxenda should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adult patients with an initial body mass index, BMI of 30 (obese) or 27 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one other chronic health condition (e.g. high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol). Or adults needing to lose weight for surgery.

Full instruction and guidance will be given by the pharmacist on how to do the injections however here are some points to consider.

  • Saxenda is administered once daily.

  • Inject your dose of Saxenda under the skin (subcutaneous injection) in your stomach area (abdomen), upper leg (thigh), or upper arm. It is also recommended that you alternate the site at which the injection is made. Never inject into a vein or muscle.

  • Push the needle all the way into the skin at a 90 degrees angle.

  • Inject the Saxenda and leave the syringe in place while you count slowly to six to make sure the full dose is delivered.

  • If the disposable needle found at the tip of one of your Saxenda pens bends out of shape whilst you are trying to use the pen, you should discard the needle, in your yellow sharps bin, and use a new one.

  • Never share your Saxenda pen or needles with another person. You may give an infection to them or get an infection from them.

Included in this service is free access to a lifestyle app, and we will send you an access code when you start your journey. By using the lifestyle app, you can track and monitor health and lifestyle goals and ask questions to a qualified health coach via the app.

After having a full consultation with the pharmacist, they will initiate treatment for Saxenda with you. For some, they may wish to purchase injectable pens individually, that is why we are able to provide you a minimum of one pen and a maximum of five.

You use these by gradually increasing your dose over the first five weeks. When you are just starting your journey, a single pen should last 17 days. When you have reached your maintenance dose, a pack of 5 pens should last 30 days. Our pharmacies are here to support you and provide guidance throughout this journey.

We recommend you taking photo evidence each month to see the stages of progress as you travel on your journey.
